Social housing head-leases

This program aims to increase the number of social housing properties available to low income Territorians and their families.

The department is also seeking to increase the availability of properties suitable for seniors and people with a disability.

The department will offer long-term leases to property owners.  It will then sublease those properties to tenants who qualify for social housing.

The preference is for properties which can be constructed immediately, or are due to be constructed and completed by June 30, 2020.  This will stimulate the construction industry, and allow builders to leverage off the head-leases to finance further developments.

Where this is not possible, the department may consider properties no more than five years old.  Older properties may be considered in some locations.

The department is seeking one or two bedroom properties, with adequate parking, access and proximity to local amenity and essential services such as transport, shops, schools and employment.
